TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) will help you to teach English to school children and adult learners at home or around the world. Use TKT to increase your confidence as a teacher and improve your job prospects.

TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is ideal if you:
  • want to improve your career opportunities by widening your teaching experience into specialist areas
  • want to keep your teaching skills up to date
  • are already teaching, but would like to take an internationally recognised qualification to gain formal recognition for your experience.
Preparing for TKT will improve your confidence as a teacher and give you the knowledge and skills to help you develop your career. You don’t have to be a native English speaker and TKT is recommended for candidates with level B1 or above.

Module 1 - Background to language teaching
This module tests candidates’ knowledge of terms and concepts common in English language teaching. It also focuses on the factors underpinning the learning of English and knowledge of the range and functions of the choices teachers have at their disposal to cater for these learning factors.

The test
TKT: Module 1 has one paper. It lasts 1 hour 20 minutes and has 80 questions. The test is divided into three parts:
  1. describing language and language skills (40 questions)
  2. background to language learning (15 questions)
  3. background to language teaching (25 questions)

Module 2 - Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching
This module focuses on what teachers consider and do while planning their teaching. It also considers the linguistic and methodological reference resources that are available to guide teachers in their lesson planning.

The test
TKT: Module 2 has one paper. It lasts 1 hour 20 minutes and has 80 questions. The test is divided into two parts:
  1. planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons (40 questions)
  2. selection and use of resources (40 questions)

Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process
This module tests teachers’ knowledge of what happens in the classroom in terms of the language used by the teacher or learners, the roles the teacher can fulfil, and the ways in which the teacher can manage and exploit classroom events and interactions.

The test
TKT: Module 3 has one paper. 1 hour 20 minutes and has 80 questions. The test is divided into two parts:
  1. teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom (40 questions)
  2. classroom management (40 questions)

CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning
TKT: CLIL tests the understanding of teaching curriculum subjects through the medium of a second or third language.

TKT: CLIL tests knowledge of the aims and rationale of a CLIL approach. It covers the planning, teaching and assessment of CLIL. It also focuses on teachers’ awareness of learning demands and support strategies for learners in CLIL programmes.

  1. knowledge of the principles of CLIL
  2. lesson preparation in a CLIL context

YL - Young Learners
TKT: Young Learners is a test of the knowledge of the strategies and skills required to teach young learners. TKT: Young Learners is ideal if you are a teacher working in primary education.

TKT: Young Learners tests the background knowledge related to teaching young learners of between 6–12 years of age. It also tests understanding of planning lessons, different teaching strategies and assessing learning.

The test

  4. classroom-based assessment

Are you a private candidate?
It’s easy to register for Cambridge English: TKT
in just three steps:
Step 1  Find an exam date

You can take the Cambridge English exams most months of the year.
Use our online search to find an exam date.

Step 2  Complete the registration form

You can complete the exam registration form online or come to our offices to register for an exam.

Step 3  Make payment

Payment must be made before the registration deadline. If you register or pay after the deadline a late fee will be applied.
You can choose to pay for your exam via the following payment methods:

    IMPORTANT: If you pay for your exam by bank transfer you should clearly state the name and surname/s of the candidate and the level and date of the exam session. All transfers must reach us free of bank charges or interest. Exams Catalunya will not be responsible for these charges. You must send us the payment receipt by email to registrations@exams-catalunya.com so that we may trace your payment with the bank. Your place on the exam will not be confirmed until we receive a payment receipt for the exam fee.

  3. At our offices:
    Registration and payment for exams may also be made at our offices. If candidates choose this option payment should be made on registering. Payment may be made in cash, by bank transfer or credit/debit card.
