This seminar is ideal for newly-qualified teachers or for anyone who feels like they could brush up on the most common tenses. This seminar dealt with the type of grammar that comes up at C1+ level: inversion, distancing, past narrative tenses, modals used for speculation and deduction, participle clauses, mixed conditionals, ellipsis and substitution, cleft sentences. It was aimed at more experienced teachers or those teachers planning to prepare students for higher-level exams.

Classroom Management for Young Learners

Have your young students taken over your classroom? Whether you're new to teaching young learners or have some experience, all teachers find they come across students who, despite their best efforts, turn the class upside down. This seminar looked at how young students learn and gave the participants tried and tested ideas on how to keep classes under control right from the beginning of the school year.

Bring your course book to life – how to maximise communication and cover your course book syllabus at the same time!

It can sometimes be a challenge to make the most of course book material in a communicative way. Often teachers find themselves caught between wanting to provide activities which allow for genuine communication and covering a set syllabus of grammar and vocabulary. In this workshop we looked at a variety of ways to exploit course book material so as to maximise communication in the classroom . We looked at both general English and exam preparation books with a focus on adult and young adult learners.

Using games to prepare for Starters, Movers & Flyers
Young learners are incredibly motivated by games or other classroom activities with a competitive element. In the first part of this Seminar, after a short overview of Cambridge English: Young Learner Exams, we discussed why games are important, what difficulties we face as teachers playing games in class and how we can make games fun for all. The participants were then presented with some games aimed towards helping students to get familiar with YL Exam exercises. After the break, we threw open the floor and invited everyone to share their favourite games, working together to adapt them in ways which will help students working towards the Cambridge Young Learner exams.

Making Exam Classes More Engaging

The aim of this session was to provide teachers with techniques and activities designed to make preparation classes for the most popular Cambridge English exams (FCE, CAE, CPE) more communicative and engaging. These activities focused on the following areas:

Using Songs & Videos for Exam Preparation

Musical and video activities can be far more diverse than the typical gap fill, and in fact, can be a highly useful tool in preparing students for exams as well as just a warmer or cooler. In this seminar, we saw how both songs and videos can be used in a variety of fun and engaging ways that will help students prepare for all areas of the most common ESOL exams: speed reading, listening, speaking and even the dreaded ‘Use of English’!

Strategies for Teaching and Assessing Writing at B2 Level
Teaching writing can be challenging, particularly as students progress to higher levels. The aim of this seminar was for teachers to be able to aid students in identifying and correcting their own ingrained errors. Cambridge English: First - Reading and Use of English

Many students find the Reading and Use of English paper the most challenging part of the Cambridge English: First (and First for Schools) exam. This last seminar of the season seminar provided teachers with in-depth look at this paper.
