Embracing the L1: Getting your Teens to Speak more English in Class
We are often taught in initial teacher training courses that the L1 (student’s first language) is evil and must be avoided at all costs. However, the more I tried to ban it in my classes, the more I’d struggle to get my students speaking English. In the first part of this practical workshop we’ll explore the reasons why our students rely so much on their mother tongue and look at ways to maximize the use of the L2. After the break we planned, in small groups, activities which incorporate everything we had talked about, leaving you with lots of ideas to try out in your classes.

We believe that the professional exchange and the networking among teachers during seminars are very important. Therefore, we provide enough time for such interaction and networking as well. Exams Catalunya Staff will be present at this seminar to support you with any queries you might have.

Engaging learners and developing awareness of the assessment of B2/C1 Writing Skills

In the first part of this seminar, Graham helped develop teachers’ awareness of writing assessment as a tool for analyzing specific aspects of writing. We did also share practical ideas for evaluating learners’ writing and developing writing skills in and out of class in order to prepare for the exams.
After the break, we'll looked at ways in which classroom assessment can be used to develop writing skills at B2 and C1 levels specifically. The session did also explore issues surrounding motivation to write in the 21st century, and participants came away with a set of teaching ideas/activities to use in their classrooms.
